SAN DIEGO MAGAZINE // 25 BIG IDEAS SHOOT

Tuesday, January 13th, 2015

It’s been really fun to work with the editors and designers at San Diego Magazine on a bunch of different features and articles since I’ve moved here. Executing a concept/visual alongside someone who’s worked on the idea from the beginning and will be designing a page using the images we create afterwards is such a fun complement my other shoots. I love being able to take a little time on a shoot and collaborating with other people makes the experience ever-changing.

I recently shot a few portraits for the January 2015 issue’s 25 Big Ideas story. I met up with a wide variety of people all over San Diego and shot in some strange places, including the middle of the San Diego river, a Golden Hill yard with chickens running around, and a couple of slope-y East Village rooftops. Here’s a handful of outtakes that didn’t make the print edition…

DREAMING OF SUMMER

Friday, March 29th, 2013

The days have been getting longer and warmer and it feels totally awesome. After an 86-degree trip to Palm Springs this week to help out fellow Birds of a Feather shooter Jen with a styled shoot in the desert, I do have to say I was happy to come back to San Diego’s moderate temp’s. Keep an eye out for Jen’s shoot in the next couple of weeks (instagram sneak peek here), it’s a stunner. With Easter coming up this weekend, the full-on appearance of spring is making me even more excited for my first real summer in California. I’m also dreaming of being suddenly able to surf and having sun-drenched, wavy hair that looks like this…

That’s my friend Blaire, who’s well on her way to becoming a lawyer, actually surfs, and does pretty much nothing to her hair to make it look this awesome. No fair!

PORTRAITS // MOLLY + BUD + BABY

Wednesday, February 27th, 2013

These two dear friends of ours will have a new little boy joining their family very very soon. I couldn’t be happier for them! Here are some of my favorites from a maternity shoot we did earlier this week (Molly’s due tomorrow!). Enjoy!

I’VE JOINED BIRDS OF A FEATHER(!) AND A FEW OTHER BIG CHANGES

Wednesday, February 27th, 2013

This has been a long time in the works and I’m super excited to finally announce that from now on, I’ll be shooting all of my weddings as part of a rad collective of wedding photographers called Birds of a Feather!!! We’re all based in Southern California, with Jen and Rebecca in LA, Sarah in Palm Springs, and me in San Diego, but we travel all over for weddings (Sarah and Jen just got back from Tulum, Mexico!).  My wedding portfolio is now housed on the Birds website (no longer at www.schmitzweddingphotography or www.jacquelinecampbellweddings.com) and it looks great (sneak peek below). Check it out here. While you’re there, be sure to take a look at all of Jen, Rebecca, and Sarah’s stunning photos too!

It’s been so great to get together to plan, to dream up ideas we have for our business, and get to know these awesome girls better. Naturally, we photographed a couple of our get-togethers, which tend to revolve around amazing food, so if you’re curious, check out one on Sarah’s great blog A House in the Hills here and another that appeared on Glitter Guide here.

As you may have noticed (since you’re here), the blog URL has moved. I hadn’t planned on it, but it turned out that shifting the back-end hosting was something that needed to be done. So, after way too many hours in front of the computer trying to figure out .xml files, shifting databases, posts, and images from the last two years of blogging to a new place, and occasionally banging my head against the wall while Andrew and Blue gave me funny looks, you’ll now find my blog at blog.jacquelinecampbellphotography.com. I’m so happy I pulled it off!

While I’ll be shooting weddings solely as part of Birds of  Feather now, I’ll continue to shoot travel, lifestyle, portrait, and other work via www.jacquelinecampbellphotography.com. To go along with all of the recent changes around here, I’ve also updated my travel and lifestyle portfolio and redesigned www.jacquelinecampbellphotography.com into a much cleaner, easier to use format (sneak peeks below). Take a look here! I hope you like the new look as much as I do!

MY GUYS AT THE BEACH

Tuesday, January 15th, 2013

Back in January of 2012 I posted this fun shot of a greyhound at dog beach in San Diego because it was so joyful and odd-looking. Remember that? Back then I didn’t live in San Diego and was one of those dog-less people who lurk at dog beach, enjoying the fun from the fringes. Well, so funny how things turn out – here we are in our new house in on the west coast, with our very own greyhound!

jacqueline_schmitz_campbell_01

After a couple months of paperwork and a home visit, but mostly waiting for dogs that might be a good fit to be ready for adoption, we first got to meet him at the Greyhound Adoption Center in early December. Previously named Bobby, the people at the center explained to us that he did only have half of his tail, but was otherwise A-okay. He was so friendly and playful and we loved him immediately, to the point that we didn’t really want to meet any more dogs.  So we brought him home just before Christmas and it’s been oh so much fun every since. Blue was a racing dog his whole life, so introducing him to all the joys of the “real world” (windows, riding in cars, non-greyhound dogs, stairs, wooden floors, squeaky toys, etc.) has been entertaining, sometimes challenging and mostly comical.

I think my favorite part is how Andrew, who’s never had a dog in his life, and Blue have become instant buddies. I also really like that Blue’s always wearing a tuxedo, kind of like James Bond, with the way his white patches run down his chest and parts of his feet. We’re learning more about him every day, picking out things like which ear position means ‘curious’ or ‘surprised’ or ‘nervous,’ and he seems to be settling into the life of 45-mile and hour couch potato just fine. The other day we took him on his first jaunt to dog beach and I think he liked it…

Not the best photo, but these are the surprised ears!

PS – I’m trying out this new single-column format on the blog for verticals. I think you can see a lot of more of each image that way, so I’m going to go with it for a bit. What do you think?

PORTRAITS // CRISTINA

Friday, May 4th, 2012

Cristina and I met when we were in high school, or maybe it was in our middle school days, hanging out with friends on the Eastern Shore in the sweltering Maryland summertime. I was really happy to reconnect with her in the last couple of years, since we’re both back in the DC area and working in the wedding industry. Cristina works with Gourmet by the Bay, helping clients put together amazing wedding and event meals as well as doing some gorgeous styling and planning.

When Cristina got in touch with me about shooting a few portraits together, I was excited. She’s got a great eye for putting together elegant events and an equally strong sense of personal style. In her email, she explained that she was looking for images that she could use professionally and for fun that reflected her personality. I’ve always admired Cristina’s ability to pull off almost any color with her strawberry blonde hair and I couldn’t help but smile when I saw that she’d picked great bright colors for our shoot. We hadn’t gotten to catch up face-to-face in a long time, so we met up at the National Portrait Gallery in DC to chat, to get comfortable in front of the camera, and then headed down to a nice stretch of nearby waterfront to catch the soft sunset light. Here a couple of my favorites from our waterfront shoot…

jacqueline_schmitz_campbell_portrait_01

I love the way she combined colors and textures for our shoot. Perfect!

jacqueline_schmitz_campbell_portrait_05

The girl’s got a great, effortless, summery style.

Did I mention she’s gorgeous?

I feel lucky to have Cristina as a friend and as a colleague and can’t wait to see all of the great things she’ll do in the future!

PORTRAITS // BABY ELGIE

Tuesday, November 1st, 2011

Born weighing more than 10 pounds(!), baby Elgie is one of the cheekiest, happiest babies I’ve ever laid eyes on. Elgie’s mom is a close family friend, so I figured baby portraits would be the perfect gift. I headed over to Elgie’s new home in McLean a few weeks ago, when he was still only a few days old, to catch him in all of his pudgy glory.

PORTRAITS // BABY COLIN

Saturday, June 25th, 2011

Meet Colin James Barker. Welcomed into the world in late May by my friends Alec and Erin, he is a sweet little boy. When I showed up to shoot at their home, these new parents were excited that they had just gotten their first 4+ hours of sleep in one night! Perfect. So we found some nice light and got to it…

Erin had this lovely picture of her resting with Colin in the hospital that we wanted to recreate sans all the tubes and medical stuff.

jacqueline_schmitz_campbell_10

jacqueline_schmitz_campbell_11

Of course Lu the dog was keeping an eye on us the whole time…

jacqueline_schmitz_campbell_12

So we thought we’d try and incorporate her into a shot. She decided that meant “Yes! I can finally lick Colin’s face!”

jacqueline_schmitz_campbell_13

Who me? What did I do?

Congratulations to Alec and Erin! Thanks for sharing one of Colin’s earliest days with me.
