Back in January of 2012 I posted this fun shot of a greyhound at dog beach in San Diego because it was so joyful and odd-looking. Remember that? Back then I didn’t live in San Diego and was one of those dog-less people who lurk at dog beach, enjoying the fun from the fringes. Well, so funny how things turn out – here we are in our new house in on the west coast, with our very own greyhound!

After a couple months of paperwork and a home visit, but mostly waiting for dogs that might be a good fit to be ready for adoption, we first got to meet him at the Greyhound Adoption Center in early December. Previously named Bobby, the people at the center explained to us that he did only have half of his tail, but was otherwise A-okay. He was so friendly and playful and we loved him immediately, to the point that we didn’t really want to meet any more dogs.  So we brought him home just before Christmas and it’s been oh so much fun every since. Blue was a racing dog his whole life, so introducing him to all the joys of the “real world” (windows, riding in cars, non-greyhound dogs, stairs, wooden floors, squeaky toys, etc.) has been entertaining, sometimes challenging and mostly comical.

I think my favorite part is how Andrew, who’s never had a dog in his life, and Blue have become instant buddies. I also really like that Blue’s always wearing a tuxedo, kind of like James Bond, with the way his white patches run down his chest and parts of his feet. We’re learning more about him every day, picking out things like which ear position means ‘curious’ or ‘surprised’ or ‘nervous,’ and he seems to be settling into the life of 45-mile and hour couch potato just fine. The other day we took him on his first jaunt to dog beach and I think he liked it…

Not the best photo, but these are the surprised ears!

Now, those are two handsome boys. Lucky me!

Love this one of Andrew.

Blue making new friends…check out that overbite!

PS – I’m trying out this new single-column format on the blog for verticals. I think you can see a lot of more of each image that way, so I’m going to go with it for a bit. What do you think?

Cristina and I met when we were in high school, or maybe it was in our middle school days, hanging out with friends on the Eastern Shore in the sweltering Maryland summertime. I was really happy to reconnect with her in the last couple of years, since we’re both back in the DC area and working in the wedding industry. Cristina works with Gourmet by the Bay, helping clients put together amazing wedding and event meals as well as doing some gorgeous styling and planning.

When Cristina got in touch with me about shooting a few portraits together, I was excited. She’s got a great eye for putting together elegant events and an equally strong sense of personal style. In her email, she explained that she was looking for images that she could use professionally and for fun that reflected her personality. I’ve always admired Cristina’s ability to pull off almost any color with her strawberry blonde hair and I couldn’t help but smile when I saw that she’d picked great bright colors for our shoot. We hadn’t gotten to catch up face-to-face in a long time, so we met up at the National Portrait Gallery in DC to chat, to get comfortable in front of the camera, and then headed down to a nice stretch of nearby waterfront to catch the soft sunset light. Here a couple of my favorites from our waterfront shoot…

I love the way she combined colors and textures for our shoot. Perfect!

The girl’s got a great, effortless, summery style.

Did I mention she’s gorgeous?

I feel lucky to have Cristina as a friend and as a colleague and can’t wait to see all of the great things she’ll do in the future!

Born weighing more than 10 pounds(!), baby Elgie is one of the cheekiest, happiest babies I’ve ever laid eyes on. Elgie’s mom is a close family friend, so I figured baby portraits would be the perfect gift. I headed over to Elgie’s new home in McLean a few weeks ago, when he was still only a few days old, to catch him in all of his pudgy glory.

The family beagle, Becky, was super curious about this new addition to the household.

Congratulations to Ieva and Elgie Sr. on becoming new parents!

Meet Colin James Barker. Welcomed into the world in late May by my friends Alec and Erin, he is a sweet little boy. When I showed up to shoot at their home, these new parents were excited that they had just gotten their first 4+ hours of sleep in one night! Perfect. So we found some nice light and got to it…

Erin had this lovely picture of her resting with Colin in the hospital that we wanted to recreate sans all the tubes and medical stuff.

Of course Lu the dog was keeping an eye on us the whole time…

So we thought we’d try and incorporate her into a shot. She decided that meant “Yes! I can finally lick Colin’s face!”

Who me? What did I do?

Congratulations to Alec and Erin! Thanks for sharing one of Colin’s earliest days with me.
